What Is The “Eagle” In An Organization?
The Eagle is the pinnacle of leadership in every aspect of
their lives. They soar to the heights, never flinching from high altitude. They
lead by example and they lead through example.
And they’re comfortable not being led, as they lead through their personal example.
As leaders we, of course, know that these qualities are not
necessarily natural. In fact, many of us can’t get our minds into that zone
even if we want to.
But just because they are not naturally within us doesn’t mean that we can’t develop them. The key is to develop the mindset and the behavior that enables us to become what we were born to be.
So, the question is, do we have what it takes to be an Eagle
in our organizations?
Let us see what they look like
1. Be Your Best.
If you’re not your best, why should anyone listen? It’s impossible to lead others if you’re not at your best. If you don’t give your very best, you’ll never get the best from others.
Think of how far the best in your company or organization has come over time. Think of all the opportunities that you, as a leader, missed because you weren’t your best.
So, if you’re not your best, you should start working to be. That is the only thing that can keep you leading in the right direction. This is the only way to accomplish any dream or vision.
2. Always Take Responsibility For Yourself.
You don’t need to prove that you’re someone who always takes responsibility. But if you don’t, others will. You are not responsible for leading if you’re not taking responsibility for yourself. You can’t even lead if you don’t know where you’re going. You must be confident to be a successful leader.
People will know it if you don’t take responsibility. They will feel the loss. They will feel your absence. And you won’t make your mark.
You might be able to hide it. You might be able to make it seem like it’s just a bad day. But that will fade Eventually the responsibility will get out. And then you’ll be held accountable for it. So be the one who owns up to it.
3. Say What You Mean And Mean What You Say.
Every leader needs to demonstrate this quality, even when no one is looking. It’s the reason you have a boss – to remind you of this quality. It’s also why the quality itself is so important.
The problem comes when you become distracted by trying to figure out what others will think. So, you’ll lead by giving your best to what you think is appropriate, even if it may have offended someone before they leave.
Think about what you want your own organization to stand for. How do you want it to demonstrate your values and principles? Be sure to live up to what you want others to believe about you.
4. Never Let Anyone Else Decide Your Direction.
No one else has to be involved. The people closest to you don’t have to be involved. They just have to know what you’re trying to do, and you have to know what you’re willing to go decide to do.
So, ensure to set your direction. Then just get on with it.
Do it, whatever it takes. It doesn’t matter who you have to answer to. It
doesn’t matter if you have to answer your friends, your family, or the board.
It doesn’t matter if you don’t have to answer to anyone at all. Just do what it takes.
Do what you’re doing with your own life – and you’ll be fulfilling what you hope to do, to accomplish your career.
5. Be A Role Model For Others.
When you are your best, you represent that best to others. But when you’re not your best, your reputation can suffer. It can affect your relationships, and it can damage your standing and your integrity.
When you’re not on top of your job or position, you’re not the leader that others will want to follow. And that’s a problem.
So, if you want others to follow you, you’d better follow yourself. You’d better be the best.
6. Make The Hard Decisions.
If you want to become an Eagle, you’ll learn to make hard decisions. You’ll need to know what has to be done to make your organization move forward.
And you should make tough calls. This means You’ll have to say “no”. And you’ll have to be the one who leads the way.
7. Ask Tough Questions.
The leader who doesn’t ask tough questions has a problem. They’re the ones who don’t know what’s going on in their own organization. They’re the ones who can’t answer their own questions. And may find it difficult to lead their own life.
If you want others to feel respected and listened to, you’ll need to ask questions that lead to tough decisions.
8. Build A Strong Team.
When you’re trying to become an Eagle, you will have to build a strong team. You’ll need to have followers and members who know what they’re doing. And those who know how to follow their own path.
You should build up leaders who can guide you to the finish line, those who can take you where you need to go. And they’ll need to work with the same mindset that you have – without even knowing that you’re leading them.
And your team of leaders should have enough passion for their jobs that they’ll want to do it even when it isn’t fun. That’s leadership. That’s the kind of leadership that will earn you the title of Eagle.
9. Be The Best Leader You Can Be.
The Eagle doesn’t have a plan, but it does have the courage to put any plan into action. They’re not looking at anyone else. They’re not making excuses. And they’re not avoiding accountability.
The Eagle is always learning. And they’re constantly evolving. That’s what we want to be. That’s what we were born to be. That’s the kind of leader we want to be, the kind of leader our organization should have.
10. Be Honest.
Some of the things that the Eagles don’t have are; time,
money, or resources. There’s no way that you can take everyone with you on the
path to your best.
You won’t have enough
time. You won’t have enough money. And you can’t magically make resources
appear.
That’s why it’s so important, to be honest with yourself.
Be honest about what you need, about what you want, about where you want to go. And be honest with others. You can’t play this game without everyone having the same goal.
And that goal is for your life to be better. For the quality of your relationships to be better. For your team to be bigger and stronger. And for your reputation to be higher than it’s ever been.
