Being mindful is the bedrock of resilience. It means being aware of the situation and what is happening.
It means knowing how to make it better and learning from it, rather than avoiding it. It means being emotionally intelligent and learning to manage your emotions.
When you’re being mindful, you develop emotional intelligence and are able to respond appropriately. This helps you to know how to react to difficult situations and how to create change.
Resilience can help you overcome adversity, adversity is a way of getting stronger.
Being resilient is becoming stronger because adversity has changed you.
“Resilience is getting up when you’ve been knocked down.” – Theodore Roosevelt
In this article I would love to share with you about resilience and how you can be resilient in challenging moments.
What Does Resilience Mean?
We are surrounded by a world of uncertainty – the unexpected will happen.
In such uncertain times, the ability to bounce back is one of the most important characteristics that an individual can possess.
But just how resilient are we?
Resilience is the ability or series of abilities to adapt to change in any environment.
In business the term is normally used to refer to those who can thrive when things get difficult.
People who are considered resilient tend to be better able to adapt to change, handle pressure, keep their cool, and remain calm in demanding situations.
How To Find Resilience in Trying Times.
We’re all trying to find meaning in our daily life and deal with the challenges we’ve been given.
Life’s just tough, at times. And the thing is, that’s when you need to find some resilience to get through it.
Here’s a shortlist of some of the best ways you can find your own resilience.
1. Realise it’s part of a cycle
Adversity and challenge is part of life. This applies to many situations such as family problems, education, financial difficulties, or even losing a job.
You’ve been through worse and you’ll be through better.
If you learn to be happy with what you’ve got, you don’t take things for granted and you don’t go through life with a constant struggle of wanting more.
Being resilient is being happy and satisfied in the situation you’re in.
Adversity doesn’t have to leave you miserable.
It can make you stronger and you can be grateful for what you have and the people in your life.
2. Be Mindful Of The Adversity
Mindfulness means being aware of your thoughts and emotions.
Try to observe your thoughts and feelings before responding.
This means being aware of what you’re feeling and thinking, so you can identify when you’re being negative or getting angry.
Mindfulness also means noticing when you’re getting upset or anxious. If you’re in a bad situation, you have to take the time to process your emotions before you can find a way out of it.
So, being aware of your situation is important when you’re trying to find resilience.
You’ll have more understanding of what’s happening and you can make a plan of action and put strategies in place.
3. Look at it objectively.
Adversity is an event. You can’t determine whether it would happen or not,it's not in your control.
But you can make yourself feel better about it. It’s your attitude towards it that makes it go away or make you stronger.
When you look at something negatively, you get an image in your mind.
This is what you have to train yourself to look at and train yourself to think about a good event.
You can’t think of yourself as a victim of everything that happens in life.
Because you are a part of the whole system and you are not going to be able to stop bad things happening in life or coming to you.
There’s nothing wrong with adversity, it’s all part of life.
When adversity happens, if you look at it as part of life, then you will get a better mindset and also stronger.
4. Find other people to do things with
When you have friends who are doing cool stuff and want to hang out together, you’re less likely to want to sit alone, doing nothing.
A huge chunk of your anxiety/stress probably comes from trying to impress others, or from worrying what they’ll think of you or your actions.
Try and find someone with similar goals and values to you, to hang out with. You can even play ‘I’m not good enough’ with each other.
5. Let Go Of Negative Thinking
Letting go of negative thinking is the first step towards being resilient.
This means recognising the thoughts that are running through your mind and being aware of them so you can change them.
If you keep thinking negatively, you’ll make yourself miserable.
By looking at the situation negatively, it changes what you think and makes you feel down and sad.
And you will get stuck thinking about how bad the situation is.
It’s the same thing that happens when you have a bad experience. You don’t think about the event; you think about how bad it was and what happened.
6. Give It Time To Change.
Always understand that you can’t change the situation.
It’s only your thinking about the situation that makes it negative or positive.
When you have a negative thought, you don’t give yourself time to change your mind.
You may start to feel frustrated that you can’t change the situation.
But you can. All you need is a different mindset that would help change your thoughts and to become resilient.
7. Get A Sense Of What Makes You Happy.
We’re living our lives at the speed of life. It’s about reacting to the here and now.
But your life is about living a balanced life, where you are happy in both the now and the future.
8. Talk about it.
When you talk about the situation, you’ll stop being in it and you’ll feel more in control.
You can be mindful about what you’re thinking about and start thinking about a different situation.
The people you’re talking to can also change your thinking. When you talk about the situation, you’ll let out your thoughts and emotions.
And you’ll able to let go of some of the pressure, and learn from it.
Also, when you talk about the situation, it changes what you think about the situation.
You shift thought and start thinking of other positive events and make new plans.
9. Give Yourself Time.
When you’re feeling down or stressed, you won’t be able to respond properly to the situation.
This is when it’s good to give yourself some time.
Because time to cope with situation is important especially when you’re trying to become resilient.
10. Believe you can do it.
It’s great if you can’t think of a reason to do something.
But it’s also really important to have a very clear understanding that you can actually achieve any goal, no matter how big or small.
This doesn’t mean you will, but it means that you should be able to work it out.
If you can’t achieve the goal, then lookout what you need to do to make it happen.
11. Have Empathy And Understanding.
During the trying times of life you can only think about how bad the situation is and how you’re not going to be able to get out of it.
You shouldn't get upset about what’s happening to you, because you’re in it.
Instead the more you’re bad and depressed you feel, the more you’re in the situation.
The best thing you can do is have empathy and understanding.
You can start by accepting the situation and not getting so upset about it.
12. Learn From It.
When you’re having a bad situation, you can learn from it.
No matter how terrible or bad the circumstance is , it helps you to learn from it.
And you’ll will be able to learn a lot about yourself.
You’ll recognize how you’re getting upset, where you’re overreacting or getting it wrong.
And you can work out ways to change these emotions and behaviours.
13. Realise That There’s Never A Perfect Time.
This one really gets my heart in my throat.
You want to do certain things at the right time, or in the right way.
For example, you want to get a great job.
But there’s no one set path to get to a job that you enjoy.
It’s about finding a job that you enjoy, and using your skills and what you do well to make sure that you get the job.
14. Use That "Inner Critic’ To Become More Resilient.
Your inner critic is the part of you that’s constantly trying to protect you from danger and make you feel bad about what you do.
It’s always criticising you and making sure you don’t do anything to get a little bit better.
You should be able to recognize this and you will find resilience in whatever times.
15. Be More Proactive Than Reactive.
The way that we live is reactive.
We’re always reacting to life, and doing stuff in the past.
The problem with that is that we would always be thinking about what we need to be doing in the future.
When we get stuck in the past, we’re not really thinking about what’s going on in the now.
16 Find The Things you Love Doing.
There’s always going to be a reason to do something.
But sometimes it’s not so much about having a reason to do something.
It’s about the act of doing something.
It’s great to have a reason to do something, but it’s even more important to like doing what you’re doing.
And when you feel you’re not doing enough to ‘like’ what you’re doing, you’ll want to find something else that you like.
Doing what you love or like helps you to live in the now and to find resilience in life .
How To increase Your resilience.
1. Through Self development.
One way to increase your resilience is to focus on self-development.
We learn from our mistakes. It’s impossible to avoid mistakes.
As long as we are a human being, we are going to make them.
This means we need to learn from our mistakes.
One of the ways we can do this is by talking about our mistakes.
Letting others know about our mistakes is a great way to learn and improve.
We also need to be mindful of our situation and our needs.
As much as we might like to think that our circumstances can control us, they can’t.
Every situation will require us to make a choice and to exercise our will.
If you think that you have to adapt to other people’s behavior, that’s going to make you feel out of control.
2. Being More Flexible.
Another great way to increase resilience is to be more flexible.
What you think of as a rigid personality is usually a response to the situation.
You need to know how to adapt. To adapt is a state of mind that allows you to go with the flow.
Resilience is about not letting fear take over when things don’t go the way you want them to go.
You have to be flexible, and that can be as simple as changing your schedule or adapting a recipe.
